Enrolment

The zone for West Hawthorn Pre-school runs west along Barkers Road from Glenferrie Road to the Yarra River, then south along the river to Wallen Road/Riversdale Road, then east up Riversdale Road to Glenferrie and north along Glenferrie Road to Barkers Road. We welcome enquiries and applications from outside the zone.

Our enrolment procedure falls under the City of Boroondara’s Kindergarten Central Enrolment Scheme (BKCES). This is a centralised process developed by the council to ensure consistency for families enrolling in kindergartens in Boroondara.

Enrolment applications can be lodged online via the BKCES website. Information kits and hard copy application forms are also available on the website or Council offices and Boroondara libraries.  BKCES manage the wait lists so please contact them for any enquiries regarding the application process.

You can apply through BKCES after your child has turned 2 years old.  Also see When to Start Kinder.

Your child must be 3 years of age before commencing 3-year-old kindergarten. This means that your child may start kindergarten after the start of term 1. You may be required to pay the full-term fee in advance to hold the place.  Your child has to be 4 years of age by 30 April to be eligible to attend 4-year-old kindergarten in that year.   Your child has to be immunised to attend kindergarten. An Immunisation History Statement from the Australian Immunisation Register is required by legislation.

The date you lodge your application form is no longer part of the selection criteria the BKCES use to determine offers of placement.

3 year old places are allocated according to:
  1. High priority children who are residents of the City of Boroondara (children at risk of abuse or neglect; children identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; or children with additional needs)
  2. Deferrals (children who deferred or withdrew from a place the year before)
  3. Siblings (children who had a sibling complete the 3 and/or 4 year programs, within a 5 year timeframe)
  4. Residents of the City of Boroondara who apply to their closest kindergarten
  5. All other applicants who are residents of the City of Boroondara
  6. Children who do not reside in the City of Boroondara but have been identified as high priority children
  7. All other applicants who do not reside in the City of Boroondara

  2. Repeats (children who have received funding for a second year of 4 year old kindergarten are placed at the same kindergarten)
  3. Deferrals (children who deferred or withdrew from a place the year before)
  4. 3 year olds (children who completed the 3 year old at the kindergarten the year before – and applied for a position in the 4 year old program at the same kindergarten)

Further along the application process with BKCES, once offers have been accepted they will notify us, usually late in September, of the families starting in the new year.  Then we will send out a Welcome email with how to enrol your child in our program, as well as other information. Further information can be found in our Enrolment and Orientation Policy.  Please contact us if you have any queries regarding this enrolment process.
